Weaving Tools and Tests

 Various Weaving Tools

I've been teaching myself how to weave for an art piece I'm working on for the SF Bay Area Renewal Residency (https://www.transformcreative.org/residencyhttps://www.instagram.com/transform_arts/). This has come with lots of experimenting with sett*, weft* thickness (I'm making my own "yarn" out of old t-shirts), and various weaving needles and bobbins.

The experimenting is made possible by 3D design and printing. I replicate/modify tools I see online and make little test looms to see how sett, warp*, and weft affect the weaving.

*Weaving Terminology

loom: frame used for weaving
warp: string wrapped on the loom acting as a "canvas" for the weaving
weft: string/fiber that is woven onto/around the warp
sett: distance between the warp strings
tapestry: a weaving in which the warp strings aren't visible, only the weft, allowing for more control over the final image
