2024 Bay Area Transform Art Residency

I created this weaving from old T-Shirts for the 2024 Bay Area Transform Art's Renewal Residency.

A digital sketch to plan out the composition with the t-shirt colors I had available.

This is the screenshot from WALL-E that the weaving composition is based on.

A to-scale pencil sketch of the composition.

How to make T-shirt yarn

1. Lay flat and cut into strips. Zigzag back and forth to make one continuous piece, if possible.

2. With your hands stretch out segments of the strips. The strip will curl up on itself to make a "yarn". Progress down the entire length of the strips, stretching it out section by section.

3. Roll into a yarn ball!

I designed 3D printed all of my weaving tools as well as some mini-looms to figure out what tools and parameters I liked: how far apart to space (sett) the loom strings (warp), and how thick to make the T-shirt yarn (weft).
