Custom Pochade (Cigar) Box

Above is the final pochade box. The left photo shows the storage area under the palette and where the painting surface would be held. On the right is how it looks when it's set up for painting.

Below is the process

Years ago I bought this old cigar box at a thrift store. Originally I had planned to paint a book spine on it and use it as a "secret box" on the bookshelf.

However, recently I decided this box was the perfect size for storing some paint brushes and supplies and that it would work well as a pochade box. Pochade boxes are used for plein air painting. I made a box here that mounts to a standard tripod, which is a common design for these travel easels.

Here is the cigar box before any modifications.

I took measurements and sketched out some plans, so I could 3D model the new components.

Below are some of the 3D printed parts off the machine.

I drilled holes and chiseled away parts of the box so I could fit the custom plastic parts.

Here is the assembled 3D printed knob and hook from the outside. The hook doubles to hold the painting surface when in use and to hold the box closed during storage.

I replaced the original hinges with a friction hinge that will hold it's position when open. I installed a 1/4" threaded insert in the base of the box. Lastly, I 3D modeled and added some posts and a plastic tray to hold the palette.
