Wedding Trees Web App
Chris and I got married early in 2021. It was a pandemic wedding by every definition. We had a small in-person gathering, but live-streamed it for most of our guests.
Remembering my collaborative, socially-distanced art project for my birthday the summer before, I wanted to come up with a creative way for all these remote guests to participate.

Our wedding was in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz mountains, so I created a web app in Unity, where guests could customize a redwood tree by selecting different menu options and then submit their design. I received the submissions and compiled them into a Redwood Grove Guestbook.
You can still try the web app here: https://shalan.itch.io/weddingtrees
Though I'm not monitoring the submissions anymore, I have been thinking about turning it into a project where people can make their own groves or add trees to communal groves...
Some trees compiled from actual guest submissions
I created this Unity project from scratch and taught myself how to code in C# for Unity in the process. The 2D and UI design is also a skill I don't use for work. It was fun to learn some new skills and create an entire functional app start to finish.
